Project Background & Objectives
The goal of this proposed research is to evaluate the fate of anthropogenic inorganic engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) placed in municipal solid waste landfills. We will focus on interactions between ENPs and leachate constituents based on the assumption that ENPs will mobilize in the liquid phase at some point in time. The specific objectives are to
- Evaluate how the presence of ENPs will affect biological landfill processes,
- How the presence of leachate constituents (e.g. organic matter, ammonia, and pH) will affect ENP characteristics and fate, and
- How the presence of ENPs will affect leachate treatment.
