Assessing Recycling Rates using RFID: Case Study

Improved tracking techniques, such as RFID, allow for analyses not previously possible. The objectives of this study are to develop a methodology to accurately calculate set-out and mass participation rates for micro-geographic units (e.g. census tracts, blocks). The data is then used to analyze rates using Census Bureau demographic variables to identify potential correlations between recycling rate and household demographics.

Project Goals:

  • Develop a methodology to analyze both waste and recycling rates on a small-scale within a municipality
  • Examine if correlation exists between population demographics and recycling rates
