EREF Awards Six Scholarships, Including the First Carl J. Apicella Scholarship

Raleigh, NC (September 24, 2014) – The Board of Directors of the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) is pleased to announce the award of the first Carl J. Apicella scholar as well as five EREF scholarships. The five candidates awarded the EREF scholarship are Ross Taggart, Duke University, Troy Hottle, Arizona State University, Oral Saulters, Indiana University, Stephanos Koullias, University of Massachusetts and Justin Roessler, University of Florida.

EREF Receives Endowed Scholarship from Carl Apicella

Raleigh, NC (September 12, 2014) – The Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) is pleased to announce that Carl Apicella, President of American Environmental Group, a Tetra Tech Company, has funded an endowed scholarship for the EREF scholarship program. The EREF scholarship program awards and recognizes excellence in master’s, doctoral or post-doctoral solid waste management research and education. Existing EREF masters and doctoral awards are also made in memory of Francois Fiessinger, P.E., Ph.D., a graduate of Rutgers University, a founding director of the foundation, and additional scholarships were made possible by the late Robert P. Stearns, P.E., DEE of SCS Engineers, former Chairman of EREF and Robert J. Riethmiller of PTR Baler and Compactor Company. Last year EREF established the Waste Industries Scholarship Honoring Lonnie C. Poole, Jr., an EREF founder and Director Emeritus.

EREF to Hold Regional Summit on Landfill Gas & Leachate Management

Raleigh, NC (September 9, 2014) – The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) will be holding a Regional Summit on Sustainable Solid Waste Practices & Research on November 13- 14, 2014 in Austin, Texas. The Regional Summit will focus on Landfill Gas and Leachate Management. Platinum sponsors for the event are SCS Engineers, Waste Connections, Inc. and WCA Waste Corporation. The Summit reception will be sponsored by Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc.

Waste Industries and Progressive Waste Solutions to Co-Host the 2014 EREF Fall Classic & Networking Event

Raleigh, NC (July 22, 2014) – The 2014 Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) Fall Classic & Networking Event – to be held Thursday, October 2 at Pinehurst in North Carolina – will be co-hosted by Waste Industries and Progressive Waste Solutions. The golf tournament will kick off with a Welcome Reception on the evening of Wednesday, October 1. The tournament itself will begin at 9:00 am on Thursday and will be held on Pinehurst No. 1. The tournament will be preceded by a Breakfast and followed by an Awards Luncheon. All proceeds from the tournament will support EREF’s mission, which is carried out by providing scholarships, continuing education and grants for solid waste research.

For Fourth Year in a Row, EREF is Charity of Choice for the Garbageman’s Invitational

Raleigh, NC (March 4, 2014) – The Garbageman’s Invitational Golf Tournament and Social Event was founded in 2010 by Kerry Holmes (Vice President of Sales, Consolidated Fabricators), Mike Melideo (Owner, Consolidated Fabricators) and Ray Burke (Vice President, Clean Energy). These three men set out to create a unique annual networking event for their customers and prospects in the solid waste and recycling industry throughout the United States and Canada. The 2014 Garbageman's Invitational will be held April 9 - 11th at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA.

EREF is Celebrating 20 Years of its Charitable Auction by Going Social

Raleigh, NC (February 26, 2014) – This year marks the 20th year of the Environmental Research & Education Foundation’s (EREF) Annual Charitable Auction, the foundation’s largest fundraiser. This exciting event, one of the most popular features of WasteExpo, has helped to raise more than $13 million to further EREF’s mission to fund and direct scientific research and educational initiatives for waste management practices.

Graduate Scholarships in Solid Waste Research Available from EREF

Raleigh, NC (February 19, 2014) – The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) is one of the largest sources of solid waste research funding in the U.S., allocating between $0.5 and $1 million annually in research grants and graduate level scholarships. Thus far, over 50 students have been EREF scholars, many of whom are now in key academic and professional positions across the U.S. EREF is pleased to announce that scholarship applications for the 2014-2015 academic year are now available. The application deadline is April 18, 2014.

EREF Issues Targeted Request for Proposals: High Need Topics in Solid Waste Research

Raleigh, NC (February 12, 2014) – The field of solid waste management continues to change and such changes continually bring new aspects to the sustainable management of the wastes that we, as a society, throw away. Coupled with the initiative to ensure research funded reflects the long-term strategic direction of the solid waste industry, it has also been recognized that there are specific research topics that are more urgent than others, having potential impacts that are both long and short term. To this end, this request for proposals (RFP) is intended to address high need topics, as identified by the solid waste industry via the Environmental Research & Education (EREF) Board of Directors and Research Council.
