Raleigh, NC (July 22, 2014) – The 2014 Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) Fall Classic & Networking Event – to be held Thursday, October 2 at Pinehurst in North Carolina – will be co-hosted by Waste Industries and Progressive Waste Solutions. The golf tournament will kick off with a Welcome Reception on the evening of Wednesday, October 1. The tournament itself will begin at 9:00 am on Thursday and will be held on Pinehurst No. 1. The tournament will be preceded by a Breakfast and followed by an Awards Luncheon. All proceeds from the tournament will support EREF’s mission, which is carried out by providing scholarships, continuing education and grants for solid waste research.
Raleigh, NC (March 4, 2014) – The Garbageman’s Invitational Golf Tournament and Social Event was founded in 2010 by Kerry Holmes (Vice President of Sales, Consolidated Fabricators), Mike Melideo (Owner, Consolidated Fabricators) and Ray Burke (Vice President, Clean Energy). These three men set out to create a unique annual networking event for their customers and prospects in the solid waste and recycling industry throughout the United States and Canada. The 2014 Garbageman’s Invitational will be held April 9 – 11th at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA.
Raleigh, NC (February 26, 2014) – This year marks the 20th year of the Environmental Research & Education Foundation’s (EREF) Annual Charitable Auction, the foundation’s largest fundraiser. This exciting event, one of the most popular features of WasteExpo, has helped to raise more than $13 million to further EREF’s mission to fund and direct scientific research and educational initiatives for waste management practices.
Raleigh, NC (February 19, 2014) – The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) is one of the largest sources of solid waste research funding in the U.S., allocating between $0.5 and $1 million annually in research grants and graduate level scholarships. Thus far, over 50 students have been EREF scholars, many of whom are now in key academic and professional positions across the U.S. EREF is pleased to announce that scholarship applications for the 2014-2015 academic year are now available. The application deadline is April 18, 2014.
Raleigh, NC (February 12, 2014) – The field of solid waste management continues to change and such changes continually bring new aspects to the sustainable management of the wastes that we, as a society, throw away. Coupled with the initiative to ensure research funded reflects the long-term strategic direction of the solid waste industry, it has also been recognized that there are specific research topics that are more urgent than others, having potential impacts that are both long and short term. To this end, this request for proposals (RFP) is intended to address high need topics, as identified by the solid waste industry via the Environmental Research & Education (EREF) Board of Directors and Research Council.

Raleigh, NC (December 9, 2013) – The Board of Directors of the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) is pleased to announce the award of scholarships to one masters and three doctoral students. A Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Master’s Scholarship was given to Jie Pan, Yale University. The Stearns/SCS scholarship is named in honor of the late Robert P. Stearns, former chairman of the EREF board and a co-founder of SCS Engineers. A Fiessinger Doctoral Scholarship was given to Ella Kim, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Fiessinger scholarship is named in honor of Francois Fiessinger, P.E., Ph.D., an engineering graduate of Rutgers University, was a founding director of EREF. Doctoral candidate Xunchang Fei, Universty of Michigan received an EREF scholarship. The very first Waste Industries Scholarship Honoring Lonnie C. Poole, Jr. was awarded to doctoral candidate Megan Jaunich, North Carolina State University.
Raleigh, NC (September 3, 2013) – The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) will be holding a Regional Summit on Sustainable Solid Waste Practices & Research on October 8 – 9, 2013 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Regional Summit will focus on Managing & Treating Landfill Leachate.
Suitable for executives, managers, technical personnel, regulators and consultants, EREF’s Regional Summits present key solid waste research findings and highlight impacts on practice as well as provide updates on legislative activities/policy as they relate to needed research.
