This webinar will present various ways municipal solid waste (MSW) is tracked and quantified in the U.S. An overview of MSW data availability and the entities that track and maintain these data will be shared. Then, a detailed examination of the most commonly used methods to quantify the amount and composition of MSW will be presented. The webinar will focus on developing an understanding of the base data and methodology of MSW management and composition studies. Results from the various studies will also be shared.

Upon completion of this webinar, the attendee will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of tracking MSW generation, management and composition
  • Discuss MSW management data availability and tracking
  • Compare and contrast the methodologies of common MSW generation, management and characterization studies
  • Understand and apply tonnage and composition results from MSW studies

Debra L. Kantner
Data & Policy Program Manager
Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF)

Debra Kantner is the Data & Policy Program Manager for the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF), where she performs state of practice research related to waste generation, disposal and recycling rates; and solid waste policy and technology. In this role, she works to disseminate findings from EREF’s data and policy analysis projects to advance sustainable waste management.

She holds B.S. and M.Eng. degrees in Environmental Engineering from N.C. State University and has completed graduate coursework in Biological, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering. Her research interests include recycling and diversion policies, organics management and life-cycle assessment.
