Introduction to Life-Cycle Assessment for Sustainable Materials Management: Considering environmental burden in end-of-life decision-making

This webinar will present the concept of life-cycle thinking and life-cycle assessment (LCA). LCA is becoming more widely used to understand sustainability and make end-of-life decisions, requiring that personnel throughout solid waste management gain familiarity with this approach. Using examples from sustainable materials management, participants will be exposed to key concepts and terminology in LCA.

Through this webinar, participants will:

  • Become familiar with life-cycle thinking as a way to understand environmental burden and approach decision-making
  • Explore why life-cycle thinking and LCA are incorporated into solid waste management and policy
  • Learn key terminology used in life-cycle assessment and the types of analyses that can be performed
  • Develop an appreciation of key considerations when using a life-cycle approach

Presented by:

Bryan Staley, P.E., Ph.D.
Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF)

President and CEO

Bryan_for_webDr. Bryan Staley currently serves as President and CEO of the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF), one of the largest sources of research funding and graduate scholarships related to solid waste management. He joined EREF in 2008, where he started as Vice President of Environmental Programs, and has 20 years’ experience in the environmental engineering field.

He is recognized nationally as technical expert in sustainable solid waste management issues and obtained a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University, where his research focused on understanding microbiological mechanisms for waste decomposition and methane generation from solid waste. He also holds a Master’s degree in Biosystems Engineering from the University of Tennessee, and a B.S. in Biological & Agricultural Engineering from North Carolina State University.

Dr. Staley is a licensed professional engineer who has held key positions in consulting firms as a Project Manager and Vice President of Engineering where he managed projects ranging from solid waste management, wastewater treatment system design, to retail/commercial land development and environmental management of large-scale livestock operations.
