Continuous Direct Measurement and Modeling of Whole Site Gas Emissions Using Low-Cost Stationary and Mobile Sensors

Grantees: James M. Tinjum, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Orhun Aydin and Benjamin de Foy, Saint Louis University

Budget: $240,000

Project Duration: 2 years

Quantifying landfill gas emissions remains a challenge due to limited monitoring and variable site conditions. This EREF-funded project is advancing the field by developing low-cost, solar-powered sensors and drone-based tools to continuously measure methane emissions at multiple landfills. By integrating real-time emissions data with weather patterns and operational activity through advanced modeling, the project will help operators identify key emission sources and adjust practices accordingly. The result is a scalable, data-driven approach to improve methane tracking and support better landfill gas management.
