Kinetic Evaluation of the Thermal Decomposition of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Waste Management Systems 

Project Description 

Mfangavo’s research focuses on understanding how temperature and treatment time affect the thermal destruction of PFAS. Thermal treatment systems used in the waste management sector, includingwaste-to-energy facilities and landfill gas flares, are generally designed to effectively destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, their effectiveness in breaking down PFAS remains uncertain because of the strong carbon-fluorine bonds (C-F) in these compounds. Mfangavo’s project aims to develop a better understanding of PFAS thermal decomposition, including the products formed during the process and the kinetic parameters that govern PFAS destruction. He will also investigate whether catalysts can improve PFAS destruction efficiency at lower temperatures. Through this research, Mfangavo hopes to improve the design and operation of thermal treatment systems used for PFAS-contaminated wastes. Ultimately, his work aims to support safer and more effective wastemanagement strategies that reduce the potential for PFAS to be released back into the environment. 

Biography 

Abduel Mfangavo grew up in Tanzania, where his interest in energy and engineering eventually led him to pursue a BSc in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Dar es Salaam (2020–2024). He graduated with First Class Honors and earned recognition as one of the university’s top engineering graduates. After graduation, Abduel gained industry experience with PanAfrican Energy Tanzania, where he supported natural gas operations and engineering projects and developed a strong appreciation for the importance of balancing energy production with environmental responsibility. In 2026, Abduel began his MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of North Florida. As a Graduate Research Assistant, his research focuses on understanding the thermal decomposition of PFAS in waste management systems and how to treat these persistent contaminants more effectively. His broader interests lie at the intersection of energy, environmental engineering, and sustainability, and he hopes to build a career helping the energy industry develop cleaner, safer, and more sustainable operations.
