Description

Accurate instruments are essential for measuring landfill methane emissions, but measurement accuracy alone does not guarantee reliable emissions estimates. How frequently measurements are collected, and when they occur, can significantly affect how well results represent actual emissions over time.

This EREF Insights publication uses an M&M sampling experiment and statistical simulation to demonstrate how limited sampling can introduce substantial uncertainty, even when individual measurements are accurate. It examines the implications for landfill methane monitoring technologies, including the challenges of infrequent measurements and time-of-day restrictions. The publication highlights important considerations for evaluating monitoring methods, interpreting emissions data, and informing operational decisions, greenhouse gas inventories, and environmental policy.
