New Study Reveals Critical Insights on Consumer Behavior and Food Packaging: Opportunities for Reducing Food Waste
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Raleigh, NC | November 16, 2023 – A groundbreaking study conducted by Michigan State University (MSU), sponsored by the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment (AMERIPEN) and the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF), has unveiled significant insights into consumer behavior related to food packaging and its impact on food waste.
Key Findings:
- Consumer Knowledge Gap: The study highlights a substantial lack of consumer understanding regarding the role of packaging in preserving food freshness and reducing waste. This gap presents a crucial opportunity for educational initiatives.
- Packaging Design and Food Waste: Innovative packaging designs, particularly for fresh produce and dairy products, are essential in extending food shelf life and reducing waste. The study emphasizes the need for improved packaging solutions.
- Technological Awareness: The research found that consumer awareness of advanced packaging technologies, such as Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) and intelligent packaging, significantly influences purchasing decisions. Education on these technologies can enhance consumer choices and reduce food waste.
- Demographic Impact: The study, involving over 1,000 participants across diverse demographics, indicates varying levels of awareness and behavior concerning packaging and food waste, underscoring the need for targeted educational efforts.
Recommendations:
Based on these findings, the study proposes several recommendations, including the development of more effective packaging designs, particularly for fresh produce and dairy products, and the launch of consumer education initiatives to increase awareness about the value of innovative packaging in reducing food waste.
About the Study:
The study, set to be published in three peer-reviewed manuscripts, was led by Dr. Eva Almenar, with significant contributions from Dr. Monireh Mahmoudi, Dr. Euihark Lee, and Ms. Guanqi Lu. It represents a collaborative effort between academia and industry to address the pressing issue of food waste through improved packaging solutions.
