Description
In calendar year 2022, seven of the 50 largest waste companies in the United States (US) self-reportedly contributed over 111 billion pounds of carbon dioxide-equivalent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere. Scientists recommend that to limit global warming to 1.5˚C and avoid catastrophic climate change, global emissions across sectors must reach net zero by 2050. Achieving these reductions requires standard measurement and reporting methodologies. This report presents a comprehensive analysis of calendar year 2022 waste industry reporting, identifies areas of (dis)consensus regarding material emission sources, and assesses the reporting maturity levels of the 15 categories under scope 3 emissions.
