Landfills remain the predominant management destination for municipal solid waste (MSW) in the United States, making changes in landfill infrastructure important to understanding the nation’s broader waste management system.
This report provides an updated analysis of EREF’s facility-level landfill database, which compiles information from state facility databases, individual facility public records, and U.S. EPA records. The analysis includes landfills that accept MSW and examines both currently active facilities and facilities that have closed since 2010.
In 2025, 1,412 active landfill facilities in the U.S. accepted MSW and had disposal capacity, representing an approximately 10% decline in the number of active facilities since 2010. The report examines how that change varies across regions and explores the ownership structure of the nation’s active landfill network.
Together, these findings provide a current benchmark for understanding where MSW landfill infrastructure exists, how the network has changed over time, and the regional differences that can influence waste flows, disposal access, and long-term infrastructure planning.
