Description

Each year, a significant amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) is generated in the United States and subsequently managed via various strategies and endpoints (e.g. landfilling, incineration, recycling, composting). MSW tonnage and endpoint data can be used in various ways, such as estimating emissions, evaluating waste management-related policies, tracking resource consumption, city planning, and public works budgeting. The two primary sources of MSW data currently published vary by roughly 50%, which questions the accuracy of how much waste is managed each year. The primary goal of this study was to develop a more accurate and discreet means to track U.S. MSW management using a bottom-up facility-based methodology.
