Drivers of Spatial Variation in Methane Emissions from Capped Landfills in Southern Ontario
Landfills are a significant source of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 28 times that of carbon dioxide over a century. In Canada, landfills contribute to 24% of national methane emissions, with approximately 880 sites in Ontario alone. This project investigates the spatial and seasonal variability of methane emissions from capped landfills in Southern Ontario, focusing on how environmental and vegetative factors influence emissions. The research will analyze how variables such as air temperature, soil moisture, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, and wind affect methane fluxes. Crucially, it will explore the impact of vegetative versus non-vegetative areas on methane emissions, as vegetative cover may alter soil moisture and temperature, potentially influencing methane release patterns. Seasonal changes will also be examined to understand how fluctuations in environmental conditions throughout the year affect methane emissions. By studying these factors, the project aims to provide valuable insights into landfill management practices and contribute to strategies for reducing methane emissions, supporting Canada’s goal to cut emissions by 30% by 2030 as part of the Global Methane Pledge.
Biography
Sandani Buddhima is a dedicated researcher currently pursuing a Master of Science in Geography at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management and Forestry from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2017, where she cultivated a strong passion for environmental science. Her commitment to environmental issues led her to various research roles, including working as a Research Assistant on a World Bank-funded project focused on value-added products from laterite soil. She also contributed to a project developing a soil-based biofilter system filtering landfill greenhouse gas emissions. In fall 2023, Sandani began her master’s research at the University of Waterloo, where she investigates the spatial variation of methane emissions from capped landfills in Southern Ontario. Her research aims to bridge critical knowledge gaps by analyzing how factors like air temperature, soil moisture, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, and wind influence methane emissions, as well as how plant cover affects these emissions across different seasons. This work seeks to enhance waste management practices and provide a comprehensive understanding of methane emission drivers.
