Description

Navigating air quality permitting remains a major challenge for composting facilities, with volatile organic compound (VOC) emission estimates often based on outdated or inconsistent data. This EREF-funded study, conducted by Engineered Compost Systems and Washington State University, installed a pilot-scale covered aerated static pile (CASP) system to provide real-time, speciated VOC emission data under controlled composting conditions. Findings demonstrate that VOC emissions can be lower and more predictable under managed aeration, offering a potential alternative to default regulatory assumptions.
